In today’s high-speed production environment, automation is no longer a luxury but a core requirement for maintaining competitive advantage. A gantry loader is a robotic material handling system designed to automate the loading and unloading of CNC machines, lathes, grinding machines, and other production equipment. It uses an overhead beam structure to move parts along the X, Y, and Z axes, offering fast cycle times, exceptional repeatability, and a compact footprint compared to articulated robots. Wanka has been at the forefront of developing intelligent gantry loader solutions that integrate seamlessly into existing production lines, reducing idle time and maximizing spindle utilization.
Wanka’s gantry loader systems are engineered for versatility. They handle shaft-type workpieces, disc-type components, and irregular shapes weighing from a few grams up to several hundred kilograms. The modular design means the system can be configured with single-beam, double-beam, or high-speed telescopic arms. This flexibility allows manufacturers to automate small-batch production or high-volume mass production with equal efficiency. Because the loader operates above the machine, it conserves valuable floor space and keeps the work area free of obstacles.
Our Gantry Loader series includes products such as 1325 Gantry Loader and 1530 Gantry Loader, etc.
A standard Wanka gantry loader consists of a rigid steel beam framework, a vertical lifting axis, a horizontal traversal axis, a gripper system, and an intelligent control cabinet. The horizontal beam travels along precision linear guides driven by servo motors and rack-and-pinion or belt drives. The vertical arm carries the gripper down into the machine tool, picks the finished part, retracts, and delivers it to a conveyor or buffer station before loading a fresh blank. All movements are synchronized through a motion controller that communicates with the CNC system via standard protocols such as Profinet, EtherCAT, or Modbus.
The gripper technology is tailored to the part geometry. Wanka offers pneumatic parallel grippers, three-jaw centric grippers, magnetic grippers for ferrous parts, and custom-designed internal or external clamping units. Changeover between part types is quick—often a simple program change and gripper swap executed in under five minutes. An integrated part detection sensor confirms successful pickup and prevents crashes, protecting both the loader and the expensive CNC machine.
